The warmth of daily life soothes the human heart. In Fujian, a traditional local feast evokes nostalgia and unites communities. In recent years, Fujian has cultivated its cuisine culture, deeply integrating food with tourism. Min-style feasts are going viral: Minnan wedding banquets are hailed as the pinnacle of Chinese communal dining; the General's Feast in Meihua, Changle, Fuzhou, has taken social media by storm; and the "Groom's Soup" at tea-country weddings in Anxi, Quanzhou, has become a favorite topic among netizens.

The "15th Five-Year Plan" proposes "vigorously advancing comprehensive rural revitalization," emphasizing the need to "develop distinctive county-level economies and promote deep integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries in rural areas." Rural banquet traditions are not only cultural forms that preserve folk heritage but also vital industries driving prosperity in rural communities. Fujian's rural banquets have evolved from scattered folk activities into standardized, integrated operations, emerging as a key "Fujian-style force" in China's billion-yuan rural banquet sector. However, after gaining widespread attention, how can these banquets sustain their appeal? Fujian-style rural banquets now stand at a critical juncture for transformation and upgrading.

Why did it break out of its niche?

Rural banquets serve as tangible expressions of regional ecosystems, clan structures, folk customs, and economic systems. China's vast territory features diverse natural resources, social organizations, and cultural traditions, giving rise to distinct regional characteristics in rural banquets. Fujian's local banquets have developed a unique model through a seafood-and-land ingredient system, an economy bolstered by overseas Chinese communities, and a ritual framework woven from clan beliefs and traditional customs.

Systematic planning places Fujian at the forefront nationwide. As the first province in China to include rural banquet industrialization in its provincial development plan, Fujian has advanced the sector by hosting consecutive national industry conferences, establishing the country's first "China Rural Banquet Ingredient Distribution Hub," and forming a provincial alliance of rural chefs. These initiatives have promoted professional banquet services in both Southern and Eastern Fujian, integrating ceremonial standards, dish quality, and ritual procedures. This approach has established a standardized legacy for rural banquets and a professional service system, setting a benchmark for the规范化 development of rural banquets across the nation.

Cultural empowerment creates a unique "Fu" brand. Fujian's rural banquets leverage rich assets including Fu culture, Min customs, and cross-strait kinship ties to develop the core IP "Eight Provinces All-Fu Banquet." This has spawned over 40 county-level specialty brands such as the Zhangzhou Meihua General Banquet in Changle, Fuzhou; the Quanzhou Nan'an Chenggong Banquet; the Sanming Youxi Banshan Banquet; the Ningde Pingnan Wan'an Banquet; and the Zhangzhou Hu'an Guanshe Family Banquet. Total online exposure for these banquet series has exceeded 10 million views. Fujian further integrates rural banquets with ancient city settings, street parade traditions, She ethnic intangible heritage, and clan gatherings. By using banquets to attract visitors, tourism to retain them, and culture to add value, the province has established a scalable, routine, and commercially viable development path.

The dual empowerment of clan heritage and overseas hometowns shapes the order of banquet rituals. Fujian boasts a deep-rooted clan culture, where local banquets serve as tangible expressions of clan ethics—public ceremonies that affirm kinship ties, strengthen clan identity, and maintain community order. From the ceremonial spirit of blessings and good fortune, to the warmth of neighborly mutual aid, and the family tradition of valuing education and culture, Fujian's local banquets remain deeply intertwined with ancestral worship and prayer, fulfilling both secular social functions and spiritual roles. Given the shared roots and cultural continuity between Fujian and Taiwan, a single local banquet transcends village-level boundaries, becoming a vital link for cross-strait clan relations and fostering connections across regional communities.

What challenges exist?

Against the backdrop of nationwide industrial upgrading, Min-style village banquets face growing challenges: they have momentum but lack precision, scale but lack capability levels, and uniqueness but lack brand strength. To truly shoulder the responsibility of rural revitalization, the industry must break through its current growth bottlenecks.

Challenges in Adapting Mobile Catering Systems. Fujian village banquets rely heavily on mobile catering setups, yet face inadequate supporting infrastructure, leading to significant food waste and inefficient resource utilization. Industry standards for service workflows, hygiene control, ingredient traceability, and venue management remain unestablished, resulting in inconsistent banquet quality across regions and hindering the full realization of industrial cluster effects.

Dilemmas in Sustaining Fujianese Rural Banquet Craftsmanship. Village chefs serve as the "ballast stone" of the rural banquet industry. Older-generation chefs possess exquisite culinary skills but lack expertise in brand management and event planning; younger generations understand the market but lack deep mastery of traditional techniques. There is a critical shortage of versatile professionals who combine cooking proficiency, cultural tourism promotion, and food safety management capabilities—making it difficult to meet the demands of industrialized rural banquets.

Rural banquet industry faces limited supply chain extension. Core operations remain confined to traditional event planning and hosting, resulting in a narrow business model. High-value segments—such as immersive cultural experiences rooted in local customs, market-distinctive creative IP development and management, and premium souvenir products based on quality agricultural goods—lack effective pathways for value extraction and secondary monetization. This leads to insufficient supply chain expansion, missing value-added stages, and an incomplete industrial ecosystem that requires more robust implementation strategies.

Weakness in cultural dissemination and branding. The lack of a systematic platform for excavating, organizing, showcasing, and integratedly promoting rural banquet culture hinders the effective conversion of cultural resources into marketable tourism products or experiential offerings. Compared to established "banquet + tourism" models elsewhere in China—such as Sichuan's "Baba Banquets" and Chaoshan-style feasts in Guangdong—Min-style rural banquets still need improvement in cultural value extraction, commercialization pathways, and external brand influence.

How to break the deadlock?

Rural banquets bridge everyday life with rural revitalization. Fujian-style rural banquets must uphold integrity while embracing innovation, forging a path of rural industrial revitalization that reflects Fujian's unique character.

Deepen the Min-style rural banquet IP and build a comprehensive, distinctive brand portfolio. Drive differentiated development with "one county, one banquet; one town, one signature product," cultivating signature brands such as Fuzhou Taiping Banquet, Southern Min Red Crab Banquet, Putian-Xian Braised Tofu Banquet, Hakka Mountain Delicacies Banquet, and Overseas Chinese Nanyang Banquet. Solidify the province-wide core IP of "Eight-Fujian All-Fu Banquet." Establish a regular cross-strait rural banquet exchange platform to make "Liangma Rural Banquet" and "Lantai Family Banquet" representative cultural tourism brands for Fujian's rural cuisine. Expand Min-style rural banquets nationwide and connect them globally, positioning them as key windows for promoting Chinese culinary culture to the world.

Connect the entire industrial chain to cultivate a rural banquet economy that integrates primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. Deepen the "Banquet+" integration model to foster diverse new business formats and extend value-added opportunities along the supply chain. Establish an order-based farming and breeding supply chain linking "bases + cooperatives + local chefs," while connecting with rural tourism, homestays, and folk festivals to create immersive consumption experiences where visitors can savor regional banquets, explore the countryside, enjoy local customs, and purchase agricultural products. Drive county-level industrial development through rural banquets by deeply integrating them with scenic tours, rustic education, historic home experiences, and country leisure, forming a closed-loop integration of all three industries and transforming a single "feast" into a comprehensive "value chain."

Strengthen the foundation with talent to activate rural banquet labor resources. Establish a systematic training framework for rural chefs, focusing on traditional skills inheritance, menu innovation, and brand management, while improving tiered assessment and incentive mechanisms. Create a local chef incubation program and enhance support for returning youth entrepreneurs to cultivate a new generation of young, professional, and versatile rural banquet talents. This approach will address talent shortages and drive deep integration between traditional craftsmanship and modern industry.

Infuse culture into the soul and tell authentic stories of Fujian's local heritage. Deeply explore folk customs, regional narratives, and family traditions, integrating them into banquet design, venue styling, and ceremonial procedures so that every dish has a story and every table reflects a narrative. Systematically document local banquet rituals, symbolic meanings of dishes, and traditional etiquette to preserve diverse regional culinary identities and continuously enhance the distinctive county-level "local banquet" brand. Strengthen the roles of these banquets in cultural education, moral guidance, clan cohesion, and ancestral veneration, embodying the core values of neighborly harmony, respect for elders, blessings, and reunion—making them an iconic symbol of rural cultural revitalization.

A village feast, a touch of local life, a legacy passed down. Fujian-style rural banquets are the most vibrant carriers of Fujian's mountain-and-sea culture, overseas Chinese heritage, and clan traditions. Only by upholding integrity while embracing innovation can we drive creative transformation and innovative development of these banquets, ensuring they continue to perfume the land of Min and spread their fragrance across the five seas and four oceans.
