Is agronomy far removed from daily life? Just look at the durable, foot-traffic-resistant turf on soccer fields. Does agriculture mean "dusty in sunny weather and muddy in rain"? Not anymore. In modern greenhouses, intelligent breeding robots pollinate crops—a sight that's now commonplace. Today, classrooms and labs in agronomy, turfgrass science, and forestry are filled with sensors, drones, big data, and artificial intelligence.

A survey covering 2001 college entrance exam candidates and their parents found that 84.8% reported a more positive view of agricultural majors in recent years, while 83.2% believe smart agriculture has increased interest among people around them to pursue related fields. The Ministry of Education's 2026 list of undergraduate majors introduced new programs including Agricultural Robotics, Saline-alkali Land Science and Engineering, and Smart Fisheries. Agriculture is breaking out, offering a window into disciplinary evolution.

Why are some disciplines once considered "niche" now being reevaluated and even becoming highly sought after?

Behind this shift lies a changing demand for talent from the nation and society. Securing our food supply requires coordinated efforts across seed sources, arable land, and agricultural machinery. New research challenges have emerged in areas such as comprehensive utilization of saline-alkali soils, responses to extreme weather, and food safety. These demands connect laboratories directly with production sites, making previously intangible professional values tangible and measurable. This holds true not only for agronomy but also for geology, archaeology, surveying, and other disciplines. Major engineering safety, cultural heritage protection, and AI applications are all expanding the scope where traditional fields can make an impact.

A deeper reason lies in the cross-disciplinary integration, where boundaries are blurring and interconnections are growing stronger. Today's broad disciplinary categories are no longer isolated silos. Agriculture meets robotics to spawn intelligent farming machinery; biology combines with information technology to advance smart breeding; fisheries merge with digital technologies to expand intelligent monitoring and precision aquaculture. By the end of 2025, China's annual operational area for agricultural drones exceeded 4.6 billion mu, the share of crops bred through autonomous selection surpassed 95%, and the contribution rate of agricultural technological progress exceeded 64%. The development of modern agriculture demands even greater interdisciplinary integration, accelerating the breaking down of barriers between disciplines.

Another reason is that specialized labor is now more visible. In the past, research from "niche" disciplines often remained hidden in fields, mines, specimens, and ancient texts, unseen by the public. Today, a short video of field trials, a live-streamed artifact restoration, or a real-time deep-sea expedition can bring specialized knowledge to the forefront. Being "niche" doesn't mean lacking knowledge or social value; it simply means these areas are untapped "rich mines" waiting to be explored.

Moving from "niche" to "popular" requires a rational perspective from both academic disciplines and society at large. While program names can be new, foundational training must not be skipped. Social attention may rise, but the patience to endure long-term research remains essential. The value of a field should not be defined simply by starting salaries or industry prospects; it must be grounded in its intellectual depth and scientific substance.

Without enduring the quiet hardship of "niche" periods, there can be no widespread recognition in "hot" times. While agronomy now leverages drones and robotics, it still relies on field surveys, long-term monitoring, and repeated trials; although archaeology revolves around artifacts, it is underpinned by daily exploration, excavation, and documentation. When choosing a major, look beyond temporary trends or trendy names. Consider your personal interests, natural aptitudes, and long-term needs. Preserving the quiet integrity of niche disciplines requires us to curb utilitarian thinking and embrace long-termism.

The value of a discipline cannot be measured solely by current trends. Disciplines may rise and fall in popularity, and professions have distinct roles, but integrity and a commitment to truth are essential qualities for every dedicated professional. What truly elevates an industry is not a fleeting viral moment, but generations of people turning "cold seats" into warm opportunities and deepening ordinary work. Recognizing the purpose of every field of study and respecting every grounded effort will enable more young people to find directions worth pursuing long-term at the intersection of national needs and their personal strengths.
